Flooding : Varsity implementation Committee condole Niger Govt, Mokwa community over tragic loss of over 153 persons

Condolences

By Mohammed Baba Busu

The Implementation Committee of the Abdulsalami Abubakar University
of Agriculture and Climate Action, Mokwa, has condoled with the Niger government and Mokwa community over loss of over 153 persons as a result of flooding in the area.

This is contained in a statement signed by its Chairman Prof. Mohammed Kuta-Yahaya, and made available to newsmen in Minna on Monday.

He said that they have received the news of their deaths as painful, adding that God gives lives and take at will.

Prof. Kuta-Yahaya also urged the traditional head of Mokwa, Alhaji Shaba Aliyu, (Ndalile Mokwa) and all the people of Mokwa to
take heart and see their death as an act of God.

“We are profoundly saddened by the loss of over 153 precious lives and the
extensive destruction of homes, farmlands, and livelihoods.

“This is a time of deep grief and uncertainty for the affected families, and our thoughts and prayers remain firmly with them.

“As an institution grounded in agricultural innovation and climate resilience, we reaffirm our commitment to supporting efforts not only to aid recovery but also to prevent such tragedies in the future,” he said .

He said that the establishment of the
University in Mokwa by the present administration by Gov. Mohammed Umaru Bago, was driven
by the need to address climate-related and human-induced hazards.

“Through cutting-edge research and a collaborative, whole-of-institution approach.

“This disaster tragically underscores the importance of that vision and the
urgent need for climate-responsive infrastructure and coordinated action at
every level,” he said

Prof. Kuta- Yahaya called on
all relevant government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and the
broader public to mobilize quickly to provide relief, restore hope, and
rebuild dignity for those affected.

“As we mourn alongside the people and government of Mokwa, we call on
all relevant government agencies, humanitarian organizations, and the
broader public to mobilize quickly to provide relief, restore hope, and
rebuild dignity for those affected.

” Together, let us turn this moment of tragedy into an opportunity for long-term resilience and renewal.

“We will like to appreciate the concern and prompt response of the Federal
Government under the able leadership of Mr. President, His Excellency,
Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR (Jagaban Borgu).

“We are grateful for
standing with the people of Mokwa during this trying period,” the statement added

The statement prayed Allah to grant comfort and strength to the bereaved families and the entire Mokwa community.

It would be recalled that on May 30, tragic flood disaster claimed the lives of over 152 persons.
