NRFF Launches Landmark World Rugby Coaching and Medical Courses in Lagos
…National Coach Steve Lewis to Lead Exclusive Masterclass
The Nigeria Rugby Football Federation (NRFF) will stage a groundbreaking World Rugby Coaching Level 1 course in Lagos from Tuesday, August 12 to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, marking a major leap in the federation’s mission to build world-class coaching capacity.
For the first time, the program will be delivered entirely by Nigeria’s newly certified in-house World Rugby Educators, eliminating the need for foreign trainers and showcasing the country’s growing technical expertise. It’s part of NRFF’s broader strategy to strengthen grassroots rugby, raise coaching standards, and align with international best practices.
The highlight of the week will be an exclusive Rugby Sevens Coaching Masterclass on Wednesday, August 13, led by National Team Coach Steve Lewis. With a track record that spans guiding Nigeria’s national teams and working in elite international rugby programs, Lewis will offer advanced tactical insights and game-management strategies — helping local coaches define a distinctly Nigerian style of play from grassroots through to the national level.
“This program is a milestone in building our coaching capacity,” said NRFF President Dr. Ademola Aare. “By equipping more coaches with the right skills and certification, we ensure that players at every level receive the highest standard of training.”
The Level 1 course is open to aspiring coaches who do not yet hold World Rugby Level 1 or Medical Level 1 (First Aid in Rugby) certifications. Participants must complete prerequisite online modules before the in-person sessions.
The NRFF confirmed that similar programs will roll out across Nigeria in the coming months to widen access to certification opportunities.
