Barewa Rugby Club Brings National Spotlight to 2025 Kano 7s with Special Guest Coach Steve Lewis
Rugby excitement is building in Kano as iTry Rugby Nigeria, through its Kano State Youth Rugby Development Programme, prepares to host the 2025 Kano 7s Rugby Tournament on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at the Rugby Pitch, Racecourse, Kano.
Headlining the event will be Steve Lewis (USA), Head Coach of Nigeria’s National Rugby Team, who will serve as Guest of Honour. His presence is expected to inspire young athletes and underscore the crucial role of grassroots rugby in shaping Nigeria’s sporting future.
The tournament will feature spirited competition between teams from Kano and Zaria, with organisers promising more than just thrilling matches.
“This tournament is more than just a day of rugby,” said Martin Crawford OBE, Chairman of iTry Rugby Nigeria – Kano State Programme. “It’s an opportunity to strengthen the bonds between Kano and Zaria’s rugby communities, showcase local talent, and demonstrate the values of sportsmanship, discipline, and teamwork.”
The Kano 7s forms part of iTry Rugby Nigeria’s wider mission to grow the game among boys and girls across rural and urban communities. The Kano programme already holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s largest youth rugby development initiative.
Families, rugby fans, and curious spectators are all welcome to enjoy the day—with free entry. Attendees can expect a vibrant mix of competitive rugby, community spirit, and the chance to meet their favourite players up close in an atmosphere designed for both sport and fun.
