Cowrie FC Crowned Champions of Tunde Delu Abeokuta Rugby Cup

Cowrie RFC of Lagos emerged victorious at the inaugural Tunde Delu Abeokuta Rugby Cup, clinching the title in a thrilling final that showcased the best of Nigerian rugby.

The tournament, sponsored by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the Nigeria Rugby Football Federation, Tunde Delu, was organized to promote the sport and inspire players across the South West. The competition lived up to expectations, offering fans a blend of youthful energy and seasoned experience, providing a glimpse into the promising future of rugby in Nigeria.

In a nail-biting final, Cowrie RFC edged past Racing RFC with a narrow 26-21 victory, capping off a fiercely contested match filled with drama and top-level performances.

The third-place match saw Police RFC falter once again, continuing their poor run after a heavy 36-0 semifinal loss to Cowrie. Their struggles persisted as Kings RFC handed them another comprehensive defeat, solidifying Kings’ place on the podium and leaving Police RFC without answers.

Earlier in the semifinals, Racing RFC battled hard to overcome Kings RFC in a tight 10-7 contest, booking their spot in the final.

Speaking at the conclusion of the tournament, Tunde Delu praised the teams for their discipline and spirit throughout the event. “This is our own little way of contributing to the growth of rugby in Nigeria. We hope to make this an annual tournament and provide more opportunities for young rugby talents to shine at the highest level,” he said.

He also extended his appreciation to the President of the Federation ,Dr Ademola Are for supporting the event with logistics and for continued efforts to grow the sport nationwide.
